MODULO INSIGHT DE LA NASA PUBLICA UNA EMOTIVA DESPEDIDA DESDE MARTE

El módulo de aterrizaje en Marte InSight de la NASA ha enviado lo que probablemente sea su última comunicación desde el Planeta Rojo, publicando en Twitter una imagen de su sismómetro cubierto de polvo acompañada de un emotivo mensaje de despedida.

"Mi energía es muy baja, así que esta puede ser la última imagen que pueda enviar", decía el mensaje.

"No obstante, no os preocupéis por mí: mi tiempo aquí ha sido tan productivo como sereno.

"Si puedo seguir hablando con mi equipo de misión, lo haré, pero me despediré pronto. Gracias por acompañarme".

InSight, acrónimo de Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, aterrizó en Marte en noviembre de 2018 con la misión de estudiar la composición del interior del planeta y vigilar la actividad de los meteoritos.

Su lugar de aterrizaje, en una llanura volcánica cerca del ecuador conocida como Elysium Planitia, fue elegido por su paisaje plano y sin rasgos característicos, lo que permitió realizar mediciones sísmicas más precisas directamente desde la superficie.

El módulo de aterrizaje alcanzó sus principales objetivos científicos a finales de 2020, tras lo cual la NASA prorrogó su misión otros dos años.

Sin embargo, su dependencia de la energía solar y las periódicas tormentas de polvo de Marte hicieron que la misión fuera siempre un asunto a corto plazo.

La cuenta de Twitter @NASAInSight, gestionada por el equipo de la NASA en la Tierra, ha estado tuiteando en primera persona durante toda la misión del módulo de aterrizaje y ha conseguido más de 771.000 seguidores.

Se ha hecho famosa por publicar "selfies" tomados con el brazo robótico del módulo de aterrizaje, así como por mostrar "postales" enviadas por simpatizantes en la Tierra.

El mes pasado, la NASA advirtió de que la misión InSight estaba a punto de terminar, ya que el polvo acumulado en los paneles solares del módulo de aterrizaje había dejado a éste funcionando muy por debajo del 20% de su capacidad de generación original desde mediados de año.

La agencia espacial había apagado todos los instrumentos científicos de InSight, excepto su sismómetro, en un intento de prolongar la misión, pero afirmó que era improbable que InSight siguiera operativo más de "unas pocas semanas más".
