Hay personas que se involucran en la política por afán de figuración. Sentirse importante. Salir en los medios masivos de comunicación social. En la prensa, en la radio, en la televisión. Tener un cargo público. Un automóvil oficial con chofer y, si es posible, con escolta. Vanidad de vanidades, todo es vanidad, como dice el Eclesiastés.

Hay otros que se involucran en la política por el afán de tener. De tener poder, de tener dinero, de tener influencia.

Finalmente, hay el político que se involucra en la política por el afán de servir, de servir a una causa, a un ideal, a un pueblo, a una nación. Estos son los verdaderos políticos, los que pueden contribuir a levantar el malogrado prestigio de los políticos y de la política. Lamentablemente, no creo que estos últimos sean los más numerosos. Tampoco creo que sean los mejor comprendidos.

En el evangelio del domingo pasado aparece una escena que tiene mucho que ver con lo que estamos hablando. Jesús interpela a los discípulos: “¿De qué venían hablando en el camino?”. Y ellos le responden: “De cuál de nosotros será el más importante”. Y el Maestro los reprende diciéndoles: “Si alguno quiere ser el número uno, entonces debe ocupar el último lugar y servir a todos” (Mc 9, 33-35).

Es la visión de la política como una vocación de servicio. Es la visión que llevó al papa Pío XI a decir que “la política es la forma más excelsa de la caridad, después de la religión”. Es la política que nos conduce a la solidaridad y a la cercanía con los que sufren, con los pobres, con los más pequeños.

Política como vocación de servicio, como apostolado, como testimonio de amor al prójimo. Como testimonio de un hondo compromiso con la justicia, con la libertad, con el respeto a la dignidad de la persona humana, de cada una de las personas y del conjunto de las personas humanas, reunidas en comunidades de distinto tamaño: aldeas, parroquias, municipios, estados, naciones, comunidad internacional.

Ser político cristiano consiste nada menos y nada más en asumir el compromiso de colaborar en la construcción de la ciudad de Dios, a partir de la edificación de un orden social justo en el que prevalezcan la justicia y la libertad.

El desprestigio de la política viene del mal ejemplo que dan aquellos políticos o aquellos partidos que utilizan al pueblo y no entienden que su deber es servir al pueblo y no aprovecharse del pueblo.

Cuando sean muchos los políticos que actúen como servidores del pueblo y no como aprovechadores del poder, la política volverá a recuperar su prestigio y su honorabilidad.

En Venezuela hoy ser político de verdad, verdad, es luchar por la democracia, por la libertad, por el respeto a los derechos humanos y el Estado de Derecho, por la calidad de vida de los ciudadanos, por más y mejor educación para nuestros niños y por más y mejor salud para nuestra gente.

Es esa y no otra la tarea que tenemos por delante.
